HANS J. GRUBE
Hans, nicknamed “Gene“ for his unconditional admiration for dancer Gene Kelly, serves as Co-Producer/Controller for UnitedRain and is responsible for planing and budgeting. Hans had the good fortune of spending the most formative time of his younger years with Leighton and Catherine Rollins, theatrical and Shakespearian scholars from Boston, who had moved to Montecito, among other things an artists’ colony on the outskirts of Santa Barbara, California. Leighton had followed a call to resuscitate the venerable Lobero Theater, bringing it to fame as the unique staging post for new theatrical and musical productions that came to the West Coast. Living with the Rollins’s Hans witnessed impressive and memorable first nights of such celebrities as Charles Laughton, director, and the actors Tyrone Power, Dame Judith Anderson, Raymond Massey, and a hand-picked Choir of Twenty Voices, in the World-first on-stage performance of “John Brown’s Body” (1952), which went down in theater history as an absolute first for new standards in blending spoken word and song. He socially met such celebrities as Martha Graham, Lotte (Charlotte) Lehmann, Yehudi Menuhin and many others from the theatrical, dance and musical scene. Nevertheless, he needed a solid “day-job” to be able to raise a family. Hans studied engineering and became an aviation and transportation consultant active in Africa, Europe and the US. Planning, implementing and overseeing multi-faceted projects such as new airports and transport schemes taught him valuable skills in running and heading up substantial projects, which he is now bringing to the team of “Nightshift”, thereby having returned to his early ambitions.

Obviously dance, music and choreography plays an essential role when producing a musical-movie and we have been incredible fortunate to have renowned choreographer Karen D. Savage come on board. Over the period of 8 months she and composer/director Götz Neumann worked very closely to create what we feel is an exceptional choreography. It was exciting to see it all come alive and our great cast after weeks of rehearsals performed it and inspired our crew to create some truly awesome shots. See what Karen had to say about the process in a short interview we took with her during a shooting break.
